Artificial Intelligence ushers in fundamental changes in how software works and where it can be effective, adding the profound benefits of being able to measure, learn, model and optimize.
With Maxwell, we’re working to harness AI for IT infrastructure, essentially creating a crystal ball for what you’ll need throughout your technology stack, and then where possible, managing it all on your behalf.
Previous generations of software gave us the ability to track minutia at a level beyond human capacity, and then use it for analytics and modeling. That was a good start. However, when we add AI to the mix, we have better solutions than previously possible. AI is great for all kinds of optimization problems because forecasts can be more precise. In addition, we can measure results and improve even more over time. We now see applications in routing, logistics, scheduling, autonomous operations, and on and on.
AI tips the balance for what is safe and practical in IT because it can take on tasks that would require hundreds of years for humans to complete:
AI is of value in its ability to very accurately forecast and plan around peak resource requirements for CPU, memory, I/O and power, without sucking up all available human time.
We name our technology Maxwell, because, well, all good AI applications need a cool human name. We hope the name “Maxwell” evokes the image of friendly, helpful butler that is ready to help optimize your data center infrastructure. The name is inspired by Maxwell’s Equations for Electricity and Magnetism; in our case, Maxwell is here to improve your Efficiency and Machine and utilization.
Maxwell's core strategy is a cycle of rapidly measuring, learning, modeling, and optimizing. Maxwell forms a deep understanding of how your workloads use server resources like CPU, memory, I/O, and power. It then uses a combination of decision support and autonomous action to save you millions of dollars in IT expenses.
We are initially pointing Maxwell at optimizing the way you configure your racks, then at how you manage containers and VMs, configure hardware, and finally, IT at edge infrastructures.
In our next post, we’ll talk about how Maxwell addresses the opportunity we like to call Rack Packing.
